I am having difficulty understanding how to code pedestrian crossings volumes in Synchro. Can you supply me with an example or some explanation regarding how to code pedestrian crossings in the volumes window of Synchro.
Let's say there is a four legged intersection, and there are 25 pedestrians per hour travelling eastbound across the south leg of the intersection and 50 pedestrians per hour travelling westbound across the south leg. Into which cells (conflicting peds cells) in the volumes window do I enter the 25 and the 50? |

Pedestrians in the Volume window will reduce the saturation flow for rights and/or lefts. In your example, you would code 75 (50 + 25) conflicting peds for the EBR if these peds are crossing with the EBT phase. You would also put in 75 conflicting peds for the WBL if this is a permitted left.

John,
Is this true for both signalized and unsignalized intersections? Thanks, Terry |

Hi Terry,
For unsignalized intersections, Synchro follows the methods of the Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) year 2000 Chapter 17. The conflicting peds are considered for the TWSC analysis. However, the are not for AWSC. So, be sure to code the peds for signals and TWSC. For AWSC, they will not impact your AWSC. However, I'd code them anyway and that way if you simulate they will be included. Thanks, John John Albeck Trafficware |
