Hello Forum Members,

Every once in awhile we get questions about putting an animated SimTraffic screen shot into a multimedia file.

There are some inexpensive third party screen recording programs out there and I thought I would put some down. We are in the process of trying them out ourselves but before we make any recommendations, I thought it would be good for you to all see what we have learned so far and maybe someone has some better ideas/software out there that we don't know about.

CamStudio 2.0 (Free) Rendersoft Software - uses AVI format, but you can convert movies to Flash files.

HyperCam 1.7 ($30) Hyperionics Technology LLC - a bare-bones, bargain-priced screen recorder.

Lotus ScreenCam ($89) IBM Corp. - consists of a separate recorder and player programs. It does supposedly work under Windows XP but they are not making an update anytime soon.

ScreenCorder 3.0 ($89;$99 on CD with microphone) MatchWare Inc. - can save your on-screen activity in animated GIF, AVI, and WMV formats.

Vscreen 1.0 ($65) Versadial Solutions lets you record commentary to accompany on-screen visuals. Records to AVI format.

These were all taken from the June 17, 2003 issue of PC Magazine. If anyone else has worked with these or has any other suggestions, please put them on the forum and we'll all be able to check them out.

I have used a software called 'SnagIt' made by TechSmith. It's free to try (free version includes the software logo in the capture) but also quite inexpensive ($40) to buy (no logos in the capture). I have been using it for about 2 or 3 years and like it's features (both screen and video captures).

It's been a while since the original post above. The help section of SimTraffic talks about the possibility of a third party developing a converter or viewer software for the .s3d file that can be recorded in SimTraffic. Does anyone have any idea if that has happened (or might happen?)

Hey,

This is been awhile since it has been updated...

Here's another one that turns it into a flash (.swf) for free.

And how can you argue with that?

how long this recorder can record, for instance if I have 5 runs (1 hr recording with 10 minutes seeding) of a network of 10 intersections, how long it will be? how big the file would be compared to Simtraffic files?
