Hello,

I am attempting to model a stop controlled approach at a signalized intersection. The situation is a directional crossover on a divided boulevard that lines up with a driveway. The driveway is right turn out only and is stop controlled. The through movements on the major road and the crossover are signalized. On the crossover approach, U-turns and direct movements into the driveway are permitted.

I have attempted to model the driveway approach as a channelized right-turn lane under stop control. To do this, I set the turn type to “free” in the timing settings window. This resulted in a delay of zero for the approach, which indicates that stop control was not utilized.

If I were to run the driveway phase at the same time as the crossover phase with both being permitted, the U-turns at the crossover would yield to the right turns at the driveway.

In what seemed to be the most sensible approach, I modeled a separate link for the driveway approach (one-directional entering the intersection) and placed it just north of the intersection of the boulevard with the crossover and driveway entrance. This keeps the inbound driveway traffic at the intersection with the crossover, but results in two separate nodes. The reviewing agency was not fond of this configuration even though the HCS output gave a reasonable delay value to the stop controlled approach.

Is there a way to keep this intersection modeled as one node without assigning a signal phase to the stop controlled approach? Thanks in advance for your comments.

It is possible to include the driveway approach to the signal, but not assign it any signal phase. With this setup, the driveway approach will essentially see red 100% of the time, and you must have "right turn on red" enabled (if you uncheck the "right turn on red" option, then there will be no capacity and the results will give you an error). This option works well because a right on red funtions very similarly to a right-turn at a stop sign.

I've also got an issue with stop controlled approaches at signals. I'm working on a network where I have multiple intersections where that's the arrangement. Unfortunately, they aren't limited to right-turn-only approaches. Any suggestions for how best to model a shared right/thru/left lane on a stop-controlled approach at a signalized intersection? In prior networks where I've had that, the volumes were low enough that just treating the intersection as a T-intersetion or treating the approach as a right turn only were both options, but that's something I'd like to avoid here.

Why I can't choose the "NA" option in the Turn Type list? Maybe it is available under some situation. But I don't know when it works, would someone help me?
