Hi,

Can someone give me some guidance on when to enter some data into Conflicting Ped field or Pedestrian Calls or both?

Should I use both Conflicting Ped and Pedestrian Call fields at the same time for any type of traffic signal controls? Would this further lower down the saturation flow rate when both of them got used at same time?

Would appreciate any of your inputs.

Thanks,

mtran

Hi mtran,

The Conflicting Peds in the Volume window impact the saturation flow. If pedestrians are moving with vehicle phases, they will conflict with some movements. Enter these peds in to reduce the saturation flow for the given movement. If, however, this is an exclusive ped phase (Barnes Dance ped phase), leave this setting blank.

The Ped Calls are used to impact the Percentile Green calculations. If there is a push button for pedestrians, enter the number of peds that are placing calls. You might then see the Percentile Green times change due to ped activity (you may not if traffic volumes are high). If the signal is pretimed, there is a pedestrian recall or there is no button, then you do not need to enter ped calls.

Note: Think of ped calls as the number of pedestrians that are there to cross. It really isn't the physical number of button pushes. Synchro will consider that multiple pedestrians are crossing during one cycle.

Thanks,

John.

Hi John,

Thank you for your feedback.

Here are I got out from your feedback:
  • Conflicting Peds need to be used every time if there is some conflicting between pedestrians and vehicle movements.

  • Ped Calls are only used when there is a push button provided. The pesdestrian volumes needs to be divided by some numbers since Ped Calls number does not equal to the same number of Ped volumes, not 1:1.

John, what division should I use to converse Ped Volumes into Ped Calls when the number is high, like around 600 ped per hour by crosswalk, for the downtown area? Just wanted to make sure it was coded properly for getting the proper result.

    Thanks,

    mtran
