Hi,

I would like to gather some thoughts on what types of info do we expect to get out of the signal timing plan sheets to be used as inputs for building Sychro model for an existing condition.

Can we expect to get any following info out of timing plan sheets:
• Identifying Controller Type (pretimed, semi actuated uncoordinated, etc…)
• Identifying which phase for which approach (phase 2 for EBT, phase 5 for EBL, etc...)
• Identifying left/right Turn type (protected, permitted, etc..)
• Identifying what split setting for each phase

Thanks for any detail inputs.

Every agency has different ways of providing this information, so unfortunately there really isn't one uniform way on where to find it. However, all of the information you listed will be part of the intersections "Signal Plan" and timing sheets.

  • The controller type (ie: fixed/actuated/co-ordinated), probably won't be spelled out on the timing plan. The model of controller might hint whether it is fixed or actuated. If you see cycle lengths, offsets, or force-off's, the intersection is running co-ordinated. Timings entered as percentages also hint that the intersection is running either pretimed/fixed or co-ordinated.

  • The phase number will usually be on the "sequence sheets" or engineering diagram showing the ring-barrier diagram, and what movement is permitted during that phase.

  • The Protected/Permissive phase information is a bit tricker. If you have an interval grid on a "Sequence of Operation" sheet, this will provide this information. Some phasing diagrams also provide this information (depends on how the movements are drawn - solid lines for protected movements vs. dashed lines for permissive movements)

  • Split Settings - not sure if this is the timings (ie: max green, min green, yellow, red) or information such as recalls, overlaps etc. The former will be on the timing sheets, but the later probably will show up on a controller configuration sheets - depends on the agency.

    Hope this helps.

    Jason,

Thank you for taking your time and effort to go over each of my questions.

The hard part for us is that we have to deal with many different versions/formats of this, for the same stuffs. Hope there is some kind of statewide standard on organizing this info so we can do our work more efficient/productive.

    Thanks,

    mtran

Every agency has different priorities, philosophies, and methods of operating their signals. I'd hazard a guess that it wouldn't be unusual to see differend methods of recording timing information within the same agency, if the agency is big enough, like a State DOT or a large city/county DOT with lots of signals.
